Value Beyond the
Water
The AGUA Swim Team is
Manhattan’s premier competitive swimming team and one of the
top teams in the Northeast. The Asphalt Green Unified
Aquatics team is a youth program offered by Asphalt Green. Practices and meets are held at the George
Delacorte Olympic Pool located at East 91st Street and York Avenue
and our facility in Battery Park City.
The mission of AGUA
is to develop the character traits, technical skills, and intense
desire necessary for success. We believe the qualities which
are developed by our pursuits in the pool translate effectively to
our work habits in school and beyond to our adult
life.
Over 300 children
ages 6-18+ of all skill levels from each of the five boroughs of
New York, northern New Jersey and from around the world pursue
excellence on the AGUA Swim Team.
In recent years the
Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics program has produced US Olympic Team
Members, Olympic Medalists, Olympic Trials participants, Senior and
Junior National Championship finalists, National Junior Team
members, National Age Group and Metro LSC record holders, and
multiple swimmers ranked in the Top 100 in the world and Top 16 in
the nation.
About Asphalt Green
WHAT IS ASPHALT GREEN? Asphalt Green, home of the
AGUA swim team, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting
individuals of all ages and backgrounds to achieve health through a
lifetime of sports and fitness. Asphalt Green offers sports,
fitness and health programs to individuals, members, groups and
institutions. It is the only facility in Manhattan with a 50-meter
Olympic standard swimming pool.
Community Partnership
Through the Community Partnership, Asphalt Green
makes its outstanding programs and facilities available to all
community residents through free programming and scholarships. The
Partnership provides exceptional opportunities in sports and
fitness education to individuals with limited incomes and to
non-profit organizations and public schools that lack recreational
facilities. For example, each year over 1500 community children
learn to swim at Asphalt Green through the Waterproofing program, a
partnership with public schools.
Special Blend
Asphalt Green brings together people of different
backgrounds and abilities through scholarships for fee-based
programs. It is this special blend of people learning and
playing together that makes Asphalt Green such a unique
place.
Brief History
The AGUA swim team was formed in 1993 when the
AquaCenter opened at Asphalt Green. The name AGUA stands for the
Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics. The AGUA program was created by the
unification of several small swim programs in New York City, coming
to swim together in Manhattan’s only 50 meter Olympic
standard pool.
National Governing Body
USA SWIMMING (USAS) is the National Governing
Body for competitive swimming in the United States. USAS was
conceived in 1978 with the passage of the Amateur Sports Act which
specified that all Olympic sports would be administered
independently. As the National Governing Body for the sport, USAS
is responsible for the conduct and administration of swimming in
the United States. In this capacity, USAS formulates the rules,
implements policies and procedures, conducts the national
championships, disseminates safety and sports medicine information
and selects the athletes to represent the United States in
international competition.
Local Swimming Committees
Within the United States, USAS is divided into 59
Local Swimming Committees (LSCs); each one responsible for
administering USAS activities in a defined geographical area. Each
LSC has its own set of by-laws under which it operates. A House of
Delegates with representation of athletes, coaches, members of the
Board of Directors and clubs is responsible for managing the
business affairs of each LSC. Visit the USA Swimming website
for further information: www.usa-swimming.org.
